MI vs RCB: Royal Challengers Bangalore beat Mumbai Indians to reach IPL 4 final

CHENNAI: As expected, Chris Gayle came to the party once again. The hard-hitting Jamaican, opening the innings for Royal Challengers Bangalore, hammered Mumbai Indians' pacer Abu Nechim all over the park and forced him to concede 27 runs in his first over. The fate of the match was sealed and it was a matter of time before RCB wrapped it up.

Scorecard

The dashing West Indian left-hander showed no mercy to any MI bowler during his quick-fire knock 89 (47b, 9x4, 5x6) knock and took Royal Challengers Bangalore total to a massive 185 for four wickets in the second eliminator at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday.

It was a pretty difficult total to chase down and MI batsmen had to deliver their best to overcome the challenge from Zaheer Khan, Daniel Vettori and S Aravind on a pitch where batting second was never easy. Mumbai Indians succumbed to the pressure and eventually lost the match by 43 runs, dashing their hopes of reaching the IPL for the second consecutive time.

It was a strange decision by Mumbai Indians skipper Sachin Tendulkar to bowl first after winning the toss on a Chepauk track where the side batting first has won six out of seven games in this year's IPL so far.

Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Daniel Vettori (3-19) and Aravind (2-27) got early breakthroughs and never let MI recover from the slump. Tendulkar (40) tried his best before missing a ball from RCB spinner Syed Mohammad to be stumped by wicketkeeper AB de Villers.

There was not a single solid partnership by the MI batsmen in the middle and Kieron Pollard, Ambati Rayudu and Rohit Sharma failed to deliver when it mattered most.

Gayle received immense support from rookie Karnataka batsman Mayank Agarwal 41 (31b, 4x4, 2x6) at the top. Agarwal was dropped twice -- by Laisth Malinga and Rohit -- but the diminutive opener looked determined to score and was not afraid while taking on the likes of Harbhajan Singh, Munaf Patel and Malinga.

Gayle is in lethal form in the tournament and he has almost single-handedly guided RCB into the final. The former West Indian skipper has made life miserable for rival bowlers in the past fortnight and it was obvious that he would go after every MI bowler on Friday evening.

His intention was clear from very first ball when he hit Nechim for two consecutive fours in the first over and ended it with a six and a four. A brilliant start by RCB put huge pressure on MI and they had no clue about stopping the man on fire. RCB should have scored 20-30 more runs but Virat Kohli (8) and Luke Pomersbach (4) could not contribute much in the middle overs.

MI's main strike bowler Lasith Malinga was cautious in his approach while tackling Gayle and did not concede too many runs. Munaf Patel (2-27) was the only bowler who did his job well for Mumbai.

Compact new Nook gets touch screen, lower price

The new touch-screen Nook ships on June 10 and costs $139.
(Credit: Sarah Tew/CNET) Barnes & Noble today unveiled a smaller, relatively inexpensive Nook e-reader.
Like the original Nook, the $139 "Simple Touch Reader" has a black-and-white screen for reading books. Unlike it, though, it's got a touch screen
While that option starts nudging the e-reader closer to the tablet market, dominated at present by Apple's iPad, the new Nook doesn't have tablets' characteristic ability to run apps, something the company's Nook Color can handle. The Nook Color has a touch screen.
CEO William Lynch unveiled the new reader in New York today. For a blow-by-blow look, check CNET's live blog.

Customers can order the $139 device now, but it won't ship until June 10. Barnes & Noble also lowered the price of the original Nook to $119 and the 3G Nook to $169. Those original Nooks previously cost $149 and $199, respectively. In comparison, the top rival, Amazon's Kindle, starts at $139, and the Nook Color costs $249.
The new Nook is more compact than rivals and predecessors, with a 6-inch Pearl screen and no keyboard. The display's contrast is 50 percent better than the original Nook, the company said.
The device itself is 35 percent lighter and 15 percent thinner than original Nook, and it's got a contoured back to try to make it more easily gripped.
Among other features:
• A non-removable battery that lasts up to two months.
• Built-in Wi-Fi networking, but no 3G.
• Six fonts with seven sizes each for a more customized look.
• An 800MHz Texas Instruments OMAP 3 processor.

'Bypoll results a fitting lesson to Congress party'

YSR Congress Party President Jagan Mohan Reddy who won the Kadapa bypoll by a record margin of over 5 lakhs spoke to the media after the result was announced. Speaking to the media, Jagan said that the bypoll result is a fitting lesson to the Congress party by the people.

Jagan said that the Telugu Desam Party has combined with Congress party to cheat the people. However, the people responded to that by delivering their verdict. He thanked the people for the victory of the YSR Congress party in both Kadapa and Pulivendula byelection. Jagan credited the victory to God, his father and former Chief Minister late YS Rajasekhara Reddy and to the people who love his father.

Speaking about the party's future course of action, Jagan said that the plenary of the party would be formed on July 8th, the birth date of YSR. He said that he will take the feedback and opinion of every party worker on that day. He said that though their party flag is clear on their objectives, a detailed plan would be revealed to the public. Jagan reiterated that he would stand by the people. He said that poorer section of the people are the ones who would enjoy the most when the Government collapses. Jagan also blamed the Telugu Desam Party for acting like an alliance partner to the Government.

Ambati Rambabu credits victory to the people of Kadapa

YSR Congress Party leader Ambati Rambabu said that the effect of YSR Congress Party is so intense that the 125 year old Congress party and 30 year old Telugu Desam Party couldn't secure even their deposits in the bypoll of Kadapa and Pulivendula.

Speaking to media in Guntur, he said that Jagan Mohan Reddy has rewritten history by overwriting the record held by former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao for winning a seat with the highest majority. He credited the victory of Jagan and Y S Vijayamma to the people of Kadapa. Ambati Rambabu expressed confidence that people will continue to show the same spirit in the upcoming local body elections by voting to the candidates of YSR Congress Party.

Even though Congress sent 16 ministers for campaigning for the party in the byelection, they were left defeated. He said that Congress party has even sent a former Chief Minister and Chiranjeevi who calls himself the future chief minister. Ambati Rambabu demanded that the ministers should take moral responsibility to the defeat of Congress party and tender their resignations. Rambabu also used the opportunity to ridicule the statements of Ravindra Reddy and Veera Siva Reddy who said that they would give up their assets if Jagan wins by a majority of 2 lakhs. He also expressed confidence that today's result will change the future of the politics in the state

Jagan Mohan Reddy charges Government of neglecting farmers

YSR Congress Party President Jagan Mohan Reddy concluded his 'Rythu Deeksha' - the 48 hour hunger strike that he took up at Nallapadu today. Speaking to the farmers who attended the deeksha, Jagan said that he is hoping that the Central and State Governments will at least now realize the plight of the farmers.

Speaking on the occasion, Jagan said that the state will be happy only when the farmers are happy. He said that during the time of former Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, the minimum support price for paddy has been increased to Rs. 1000 from a mere Rs. 530. He said that the state has seen 6% development in the agriculture during the time of YSR as Chief Minister.

Expressing anguish that the farmers are neglected after the demise of YSR, he heavy charged the government for not continuing the programs initiated by the then Chief Minister. He questioned the Government on why it is not bothered about buying grains from the FCI. He called on the people to join him to recreate the 'YSR Swarna Yugam'.

Jagan also criticized the attitude of Telugu Desam Party President N Chandrababu Naidu. He ridiculed that Naidu realized about the farmers problems only after he announced his agitation. He said that Chandrababu Naidu paid the price for neglecting farmers during his time as Chief Minister.

Jagan's Vijayanagaram 'Odarpu Yatra' from May 24

Jagan Mohan Reddy will resume his 'Odarpu Yatra' in Vijayanagaram from May 24th. He will console the families of those who died with shock after the demise of former Chief Minister late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

Jagan Mohan Reddy who achieved tremendous success in the byelection of Kadapa and Pulivendula, recently announced that his Odarpu Yatra will be resumed on May 14th. However, the same has been postponed to 24th due to unknown reasons. He also took up a 48-hour hunger strike to bring the plight of the farmers to the notice of Central and State Governments.
